CAREER OPTIONS
Career Options consists of two software programmes, namely Career Mentor and Pathfinder. Career Options is an essential tool for career guidance.
CAREER MENTOR
The Career Mentor is a computer based Career Guidance and Information System, utilizing the most comprehensive database of careers, bursaries and study information in South Africa. The Career Mentor will help users to identify their fields of interest, the occupations linked to their specific field of interest, as well as the related courses offered for further studies.
Users:
- Designed to be used by learners, young people and adults.
- A useful tool for educators, psychologists, career decision facilitators and human resource managers.
The program provides users with:
Career Information: Users are able to search for career information from a database of over 650 careers. A detailed description is given of what each career entails, as well as the requirements needed to pursue the career. This includes personal requirements, as well as academic requirements. This is followed by the appropriate courses that can be studied.
Study Information: The database comprises a comprehensive list of tertiary education institutions in South Africa and details of their courses.
Bursary Information: Users are able to source financial assistance for further study. A database of bursaries, linked to occupations, can be explored.
Career Exploration Exercise: Users complete a questionnaire (in English or Afrikaans) consisting of 154 questions. The results of the career streamer are presented in a visually appealing graph indicating the users interest profile ranked according to 22 work-areas. Each work-area is then linked to a number of related careers. The user is able to identify the work-area in which they scored best, read-up on the various careers in each of these work-areas, and identify study courses related to the various occupations.
Curriculum Vitae Generator: A user-friendly application guides users through the process of building a professional CV. The CV can be printed for job application purposes.
Frequently Ask Questions: It addresses these via a ‘question and answer’ facility. Job Interview and Career Planning issues are also covered.
PATHFINDER
The Pathfinder helps individuals in the process of careers education and guidance.
Users:
- Designed to be used by young people and adults.
- Introductory screens help the user to select the most appropriate level of questions.
The Pathfinder:
- Is a careers guidance system comprising a questionnaire that matches the user’s interests and work preferences to occupations.
- Generates an interest profile and 20 job suggestions for every user.
- Shows the pros and cons of jobs and users can input their own job suggestions and see how they score.
- Is particularly useful for individuals considering higher and further education.
- Is easy to use - young people and adults will be able to work through the programme with minimal supervision.
The Career Options will be updated annually.
