The Numero series of numeracy tests
H. de Kock & P. le Roux
Many jobs make some demand on numerical skills. The Numero series of numeracy tests help employers to assess the numerical skills of current employees as well as applicants and to compare their skills to those the workplace requires. The test questions require the examinee to set up and solve the types of problems and do the types of calculations that actually occur in the workplace.
Basic Numeracy is defined as the ability to work with numbers at Grade 6 level (school), whereas Applied Numeracy is defined as the ability to apply that basic knowledge when working with numbers in practical real life situations. There are 5 tests in the series:
- Elementary Calculations - To determine whether a candidate has elementary calculation skills, even though not functioning at a basic numeracy level yet.
- Basic Numeracy - To determine whether a candidate has basic numeracy skills
- Applied Numeracy (General) - To determine whether a candidate who has basic numeracy skills can also apply those skills in everyday life situations.
- Applied Numeracy (Financial) - To determine whether a candidate who has basic numeracy skills can also apply those skills in a financial environment.
- Basic Calculator Skills - To determine whether a candidate is proficient in the use of a calculator to do basic calculations.
Three levels of achievement are distinguished for each of the tests: Achieved, Partially achieved and Not achieved.
