The General Scholastic Aptitude Test (GSAT) is a complete revision of previous group intelligence tests. The GSAT is a group test measuring the developed general scholastic aptitude of South African learners. When certain conditions are met, scores obtained may be interpreted as IQ scores. The test predicts progress in the conventional teaching situation very well across the board. Psychologists and educators will find the test an invaluable tool for facilitating optimal education for all. The GSAT was developed for English and Afrikaans-speaking learners between the ages of 9 and 18 years. Provision for a wide age spectrum was made by three overlapping series: Junior, Intermediate and Senior.

Series: Lowest Age - Highest Age

Junior 9 years 0 months 11 years 11 months
Intermediate 11 years 0 months 14 years 11 months
Senior 13 years 0 months 18 years 11 months

For older persons the norms for 18-year-olds may be used.

Equivalent forms

In the first place the two languages in which the test is offered may be regarded as equivalent forms. In addition two equivalent forms of the test are available for each of the two languages.

Shortened forms

Should insufficient time be available to apply the complete test consisting of 6 subtests (7 for the Intermediate Series), the shortened form consisting of the first 4 subtests may be applied.

Bias

Bias regarding language, sex and educational level could be satisfactorily addressed by judicious item selection. The issue of cultural context proved far more intangible and it was simply impossible to close the gap between learners from disparate backgrounds by item selection. Performance in the conventional teaching situation was predicted almost equally well for all students and for this reason it may be said that the test measures developed general scholastic aptitude for everybody. Owing to the influence of environment on the direction and extent of intelligence, development inferences about the intelligence of testees can viably be made for the non-environmentally disadvantaged only.

Norms

Norms are provided for the non-verbal, verbal and total scores. Norms were developed for:
  • the combination of English and Afrikaans-speaking learners; and
  • the non-environmentally disadvantaged.
  • Age norms: Norm scores have a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15 (IQ scale). Stanines and percentiles are also given.
  • Standard norms: Standard groups serve as reference groups. Norm scores have a mean of 50 and a standard deviation of 10.

The norms for the GSAT were published in different booklets:

The norms for Afrikaans- and English speaking non-environmentally disadvantaged White, Coloured and Indian learners are included in the Manuals.
